New Tracey Emin exhibit up "Criticise my work, but don't criticise the way I speak, don't criticise my teeth, don't criticise the way that I dress - it doesn't relate to my work," she says.
I love her.
I think it's summer now. I know because all I want to do is ride my bike, play hookey from my already hookey-esque life. I bought Matt a powerful looking tie for his new lawyering job at the thrift. I made him try it on with a suit last night--turns out it's a kids tie. It was little. Shows what I know. I cannot think very much, or deeply, about much of anything. Strangely paralyzed by the "I made a book, dream came real" and the powerless-angry feeling that Borders is shelving it in the "ROCK" section instead of "Young Adult"--my book should be as far from Riders on the Storm: My Life With Jim Morrison as possible! Also there is the waiting for things to start, for the book tour in July and then the rocking/reading tour in August with Katie Stelmanis and the twins' Bee band which is getting routed this week, taking shape (Middle west, east coast, south east, middle west). I am doing a few interviews for publications aimed at kids and the questions are really great, like "if you could be any color, what would you be and why?"--THATS THE HARDEST QUESTION ANYONE HAS EVER ASKED ME, in particular the "and why?" or if I could teleport to any place or time in history, where? I said I would go back in time to hang out with my grandma when she was my same age I was now. Then, she was a war widow, working at the phone company, and had just saved enough money to buy a new car on her own. I didn't mention she is dead now or that I would settle for just going back in time a little bit so I could show her the book. I am routing the August tour so I can go bury a book where she is buried. If I just leave it, I think it'll get taken, but I think if I bring a trowel, I can make a careful hole for it so it can stay.

What is the relationship between our bodies and technologies? Technology can no longer be considered just an attachment to our lives, through domestication we have blurred the boundries between everyday life and technology almost to the point of obscurity. What implications does this have on our morality?
The reading argues that we are using technology as an embodiment to replace  physical aspects of the human body, in effect altering our morality. We are Delegating human will to technology, the mouth and voice is replaced by online chat. We encorporate and adapt to technology, what at first might seem alien or foreign becomes so tighlty encorporated into our everyday lives that it becomes a part of our culture. Thus our Morals and values shift through communication technologies as we orientate our lives around them. Bringing me to the question: Are we making progress?
Humans are now so embodied in technology that we  have to begin to question the extent of our reliance. We depend upon technologial co(a)gents to assist us in our day to day activities, shifting ever more to the virtual world. Internet, television and the mobile phone have been encorporated into our culture to such an extent it can been seen as an addiction. Without these communication technologies our entire culture and way of life would be disrupted, can we function without?
The reading uses the couch potato as an example of embodiment and diembodiment. Functions of the body, arms-legs, that are normally used to get up and change the channel on the TV are now delegated and encorporated within the remote control. Yet this embodiment in the remote is not just a function of our physical human bodies, it becomes a symbol altering our values and morals. Within the family alone it brings up issues such as power, who is entitled to control of the remote control. However shown in the loss of the remote control, disembodiment has its limits. We are forced to get up using our arms and legs again to search for its where abouts. My question is, how far can our embodiment in technology be taken? If communication technology is so embedded within our lives altering our culture and morality, can we go so deep as to lose our very identity?
Technologies are leading us ever closer into a virtual realm of communication and away from reality. The internet provides instant messaging, email, blogging sites, facebook and the list goes on. Mobile phones allow TXT messaging diverting from less direct contact with whom your communicating. These forms of communication are less confronting than face to face. Like under the influence of alcohol it provides a certain loss of inhibition. How much of our true identity can we re-present through these technologies? Does the barrier created between you and who your contacting through forms such as the internet place a mask on who you are in realty? I beleive that when it comes down to it, its up to the individual.
In conclusion media technology is ever advancing and expanding embedding into our culture as we embrace it through domestication. We just have to step back every now and then and review how much of ourselves have we embodied in this media, to what extent has it shifted our values and morals.

fuck up, and in contrast to the supportive community of the surfers, the Londoners are constantly sniping at and trying to undermine others: he sells fake drugs to the locals while claming to live in the area, sells out Josh to a tabloid newspaper, and is prepared to sacrifice JC on the rocks of the Boneyard in order to secure a job for himself. Mike, the newspaper editor from London, tries to manipulate the surfing of the Boneyard for his own ends, adding to the damning view the film projects of London as exploiting the regions. Mike provokes a dramatic reaction from Shaper, who gives up twenty years of non-violence to punch him in the face. Though he adopts the style of a surfer and attempts to ingratiate himself into the subculture by using the slang of the surfers, Dean is disrespectful to others around him and when he goes surfing crashes through other surfers in the sea. Style has been identified as a key element of subcultures (Hebdige 1979), but in Blue Juice membership of a particular subculture requires more than the adoption of the surface elements of style it demands commitment and respect. Though he pretends to be a surfer, Dean learns this lesson the hard way when he knocks himself unconscious whilst trying to surf the deadly Boneyard. Terry, by contrast, does acquire the style of a surfer (or at least he gets a tan and grows a goatee), but only once he has made a conscious decision to broaden his experience. At the films end, Dean has discovered his place in the world and chooses to remain in the South West working as a surfboard maker apprenticed to Shaper. (This choice recalls Rentons decision in Trainspotting (Danny Boyle, 1996) to choose life, and Ewan McGregor plays both roles). As Deans example demonstrates, economic activity is related to the everyday life of the surfers and affords them the opportunity to work in the production of their leisure time.
This focus on economic activity that is appropriate to the lives of the surfers is also a feature Chloes determination to buy the local café that is the hangout for the surfers. If the metonymic image of banal regionalism is the flag hanging unnoticed on the public building, in Blue Juice this is literally the case as in one shot a flag depicting an ice cream with the word emblazoned upon it hangs limply on the local café. Chloe seeks to preserve the café from being taken over by an outsider and turned into a Captain Ahabs theme bar, and her efforts to buy the lease are a form of resistance to the homogenisation of culture that threatens to erode the distinctiveness of regional cultures. In order to raise the money to buy the lease, she organises a rave on a local beach, again emphasising the close relationship between the community and the landscape: the cliffs prove a natural amphitheatre and the beach functions as a dance floor. As JC has to surf the Boneyard in order to rescue Dean he is unable to get Chloe the money she needs to buy the café. To make up for this he purchases a broken down shack that he and the other surfers renovate, abandoning the old place because it no longer represents the authenticity of South West.
JC, the local hero who surfed the Boneyard, is approaching his thirtieth birthday has decided to travel round the world surfing and is trying to persuade his girlfriend Chloe to join him. His decision to move on is articulated by his fear that in settling down in one place he will end up like Terry boring, neurotic, and miserable. Though he has been in Cornwall for a number of years, JC is caught between his friends from London and his life in the South West, and tries to please everyone all the time but ends up pleasing no one, and this is derived from the fact that he has yet to resolve for himself which regional identity (London or South West) he should choose. His exasperation with his friends from London shows that JC has moved beyond their provincialism and exploitation of the regions, while his willingness to leave the South West indicates that he has not fully accepted his own place within the community. As a consequence of this he finds himself placeless, an outsider in both regions. This is represented spatially when Chloe kicks him out of their home, and he is forced to share with his friends in a run down caravan that is removed from the town. His failure to commit leaves him increasingly marginalised from the surfers (one even asks if he can date Chloe once JC has left), but does not reconcile him to his London friends who cause him nothing but trouble. Ironically it is Dean who resolves this conflict of identities for him: recalling the first time they came to Cornwall fresh out of school, Dean remembers that JC stood up on his first attempt at surfing and that he was a Unlike Dean, JCs regional identity is not a matter of choice; it is a matter of destiny: though he is a Londoner by birth he his decision to support Chloe and remain in the region reflects his own recognition that he has found his natural place in the world.
Ben Thompson argues that: For all its multiple happy-endings, Blue Juices final message is that the search for cultural validation and meaningful career development in post-industrial Britain is by no means an easy one (1995: 44). Though it may prove to be difficult, Blue Juices final message is that such cultural validation is possible: the ageing hippie surfer, Shaper, wonders whether he will be able to levitate if all things were in harmony, and at the close of the film he does indeed rise above the ground because the problems of the surfers and the Londoners are resolved by establishing a harmony between the region and the capital. As Lury writes, the representation of a particular community by the film is therefore designed to construct a somewhat idealised local culture as a place outwith, and literally distant from, the commercial taint and inauthenticity represented by London (2000: 101); but this idealised community is located within the nation and makes the claim for the importance of regional subcultures to the life of the nation. It is the distance of the community from London, the very fact that it is which gives the South West its uniqueness and establishes its relevance within the UK.

Baby First Year Development Milestones
Having a baby is the most precious feeling which is incomparable with any other feelings. Watching them grow and develop in front of your eyes is the important part of your memories and they will stay with you till you live. Baby development milestones start within a month of their birth and goes on. You need this info to be a better parents and could give the best newborn baby care for your first year baby.
First month to three months
In the first month the development milestones of your baby first year will be to lift their head for short time, move head from side to side, make arm movements and bring hands to face. They prefer human face than other shapes, do strong reflex movements, can focus on items which are 8 to 12 inches away, turn to familiar voices and blink at bright lights. In the second month babies smiles and track objects with their eyes. They make different noises and repeat vowel noises like ah, ooh, uh, etc. in the third month babies develop a lot. They raises their head and chest upto tummy, lift head up 45 degrees, kicks, straighten legs, open hands, shut hands, can push down with legs when lying on a hard surface, reaches for dangling objects and shakes hand toys. They also grasps toys, track moving objects, imitate sound, recognizes familiar objects and people, develop a social smile, develop hand-eye coordination, can bring both hands together, can hold head up with control and are interested in circular and spiral patterns.
Four months to six months
Most babies hold up their head at 90 degrees angle while they are on stomach. They can bear their weight on both legs and laugh and smile with some hoo and coos while talking. There are other developments which are not common in every baby like grasping a rattle, pay attention to objects, reach out for objects and do small mini push ups with roll over. Babies can hold head level with body when pulled to sit, sit without support and make a razzing sound. They will get upset if their toys are taken away. In fifth month babies can easily roll over with mini push ups, make razzing sound, turn to new sounds, recognize own name, pass object from one hand to other, pull up to standing position from the sitting position and sit momentarily without any support. They try to bring object closer which are out of reach. This is the time when they repeat sounds like ma and da and anxiety begins for separation and strangers. In the sixth month babies can keep head level in sitting position, sit with minimum support for some time, roll back in both directions, imitate sound, imitate facial expressions and reach for toys. They can sit without support, feed own self a cracker, work a lot to get the out of reach toys. They start crawling, get into sitting position from stomach, pick up small objects with fingers. They can babble and combine sounds and anxiety begins at this age which is known as separation and stranger anxiety.
From seven months to nine months
In seven months most babies can sit without support, make razzing sound, imitate sound and work at getting a toy which is out of reach. They feed self a finger food or crackers. Some babies start crawling and lunging forward and get upset if their toy is taken by others. They love to play peek a boo and can distinguish the emotion of the person talking by their voice. They can pass object from one to another hands and feeling of anxiety begins. They can stand by themselves if they hold onto something or someone. They learn to wave goodbyes and clap hands. They bang objects together and say mama, mu or baba. They can walk alone holding onto some furniture. In the ninth month, babies can stand with some support and look for dropped objects. They can stand from sitting position, clap and bang things. They can combine syllables to make different sounds. They use thumb and finger to grasp and pick things up. They walk holding onto furniture, stand alone for little time and begin to identify themselves in the mirror. They wave goodbye, drop object and look for them and understand the word”no”, as mummies often use this word to stop their children from something. There are developments which are shown by some children like saying mama to the real mother, play patty cake and balls. They can drink from a cup without any help, stand alone without support and say one or two new words.
From ten months to twelve months
In the tenth month, most babies stand holding on something, walk with the support and pull upto standing position from sitting. They can wave goodbyes, crawl well and thumb and finger pincer grasp to pick up things. Some babies can say mama to the right person, can understand the word ‘no’ but do not obey that word. They can recognize their name and respond to it. Every child has their own style and gestures to express their needs in which crying is the most common gesture. People who live around the children know about their gestures and indications. They can stand alone for some time. Some babies can drink from cup alone and stand without holding something. They can play ball and patty cake and walk for one or two step. They can put their toys in containers or boxes. In the eleventh month babies can recognize parents and say ma and da. They wave good byes, clap hands, stand alone for few moments, drink from a cup alone, imitate others, understand simple instructions and babble. Some children can walk well be little advanced than other children. In the twelfth month or after a year, babies imitate other people’s sounds and activities, indicate their needs with gestures and crying. They can crawl well and walk well with little or no help. They are afraid of strangers and pull off their socks. They can say more words than before and take few steps. They can shake their head to express their no to something. Some children who are more developed can scribble with crayons and say more than three or four words.
Things which are responsible for a child’s development
Development of children depends on many things of which love and care comes in the first number. There are other factors which also contribute to a child’s growth and development. Physical activity like playing helps them to moive their muscle and makes them flexible. Playing with toys that encourages building, stacking, pulling, kicking and throwing. Interaction helps them to live healthy relations with people around them and make them strong to face their problems alone. The ability to interact with others and socialize can be improved and developed by playing group games, participating in community get-togethers and learning something in a group. Mental activity like learning, recognition, problem solving mentality, etc are essential and they can be improved by playing puzzles and toys with different shapes, colors and sizes.
Baby Toys – important part in baby development milestones
Baby Toys are not just your baby’s playing tool, they help a lot in building their overall development. So before buying toys for your child, you should think of its utility and different ways of playing it. Baby Toys should be fun, safe, durable and attractive which gathers children’s attention. There are toys which have many levels of activity. These kinds of games help children to increase their thinking power. It is always necessary to buy products which can be played for longer period of time and make them learn something, which can be applied in their life.
Talk clever with them and behave intelligently with them
Parents generally treat their children as their property or someone who does not have brain and cannot understand your words. Many parents make stories to make their children listen to them. But this is not necessary. If you talk cleverly with your children, they will listen to you. The reason behind this is that they will feel responsible and someone with whom his parents can share something honestly. This help children to be straight forward in their words and they can speak when it is required. They will also become responsible as you share things as they are and not fake anything in front of them, which will make your child adjusting in nature.
Nutrition is important for baby development
Food is the vital thing, which helps children to develop to a healthy human being. You must know what is best and required for your child. Early stage of babies is the most vital stage and parents should take care of their food carefully. One must add all kind of nutrients in a baby’s daily diet chart. It is necessary to take care of the amount of food given to the children, less amount of food can lead to malnutrition and excess amount can lead to fat baby, which is not healthy also. Nutrition plays a vital role in baby’s development.

dating a woman exclusively for six months, and her birthday comes... it's OK to buy her a gift and tell her that you like spending time with her.
YOU'RE ALREADY IN A RELATIONSHIP.
But if you've known a woman for six DAYS and you try this kind of thing, you're going to shoot yourself in the foot.
Women are EXPERTS at recognizing men who DON'T GET IT. And if you DON'T get it, PLUS you're trying to compensate for the fact that
you don't get it with gifts and compliments, then you're REALLY screwed (or not screwed, as the case may be).
Remember what I'm about to tell you.
Burn it into your mind.
Write it on a sticky-note and put it on your computer monitor...
SINGLE, ATTRACTIVE WOMEN WATCH MEN TRY TO WIN THEM OVER ALL DAY LONG. THEY KNOW WHEN A GUY DOESN'T "GET IT"... AND
THEY'RE ANNOYED WHEN A GUY WHO DOESN'T "GET IT" JUST KEEPS TRYING AND TRYING AND TRYING.
Keep in mind that single, attractive women watch guys do this stuff 24/7. They shake their pretty heads and say "He doesn't get it... He doesn't get it... He doesn't get it" over and over and over.
The point is that if you DON'T GET IT, then nothing you do is going to work for you.
The problem is bigger than you can imagine, and you're going to need to take a totally different road to get where you're going...

WHAT ATTRACTIVE WOMEN HATE MOST ABOUT SINGLE GUYS...
Let's return to where we started.
There are a few particular things that REALLY annoy single, attractive women.
One of the reasons that these things annoy women is because they're DEAL KILLERS.
A woman can like everything about you, but if you do these things (or even ONE of these things), it can DESTROY your chances of success with a particular woman.
Here are a few of the BIG things that single women hate:

1) Giving Up Your Status In Exchange For Her Attention And Approval
If I had to describe the one single thing that both annoys women and DESTROYS a guy's chances, it would be this.
It has taken me a long time to see this particular pattern, but it's EVERYWHERE.
Men, in effect, say "Hi, I want your approval and attention. I'm willing to let YOU be the one who's in control... and let YOU call the shots... and do anything to please YOU... if you'll give me your attention and
approval".
But the problem is that women DON'T WANT you to give up your status and "manliness".
Women aren't ATTRACTED to men who act weak and tentative.
Women secretly HATE IT when a guy does something to demonstrate that he'll give away his power in return for approval.
THEY HATE IT!
I could literally write an entire book on this one single concept.
Take a few minutes to think this one over, and maybe write down the ways that you make this mistake with women.
More importantly, think about how you're going to STOP DOING IT IMMEDIATELY.

2) Being Needy, Clingy, And Insecure
When one person "clings" to another person "psychologically", the person who is being "clinged to" RESENTS and REJECTS the needy,
clingy emotional parasite...
This is WUSS behavior at its worst.
If a guy is on the phone with a girl he just met, and she says "Hey, I have to go", he might say "Aw, well... um... OK. Um, will you call me when you get home?".
Or let's say a guy and a girl are out on their first date, and they're walking around in a large department store.
Most guys will follow the woman everywhere, and not leave her side for a minute.
If she wanders away, he'll come find her IMMEDIATELY.
He'll stay physically close to her, as if he's afraid she'll leave without him.
And an even worse example is a guy who is so emotionally insecure that he actually ASKS a woman to tell him that he's nice, fun, interesting, etc.
"Do you think I'm interesting?"
"Do you think we could ever have a relationship?"
"Am I your type?"
Women HATE this stuff. It makes them shiver with the heebie-jeebies. It makes them want to RUN AWAY.

3) Not Leading - And Even Worse, Trying To Get Her To Lead
Women have WUSS-DAR.
One of the things that triggers a woman's WUSS-DAR is a man who FOLLOWS.
The REAL problem is that most women won't try to LEAD naturally.
So you've got a situation where a man is trying to FOLLOW a woman who isn't LEADING.
He's looking for little cues so he knows where to go and what to do... but he isn't getting them.
So what does he do?
He ASKS for them!
He says "So, I was thinking of maybe taking you to Olive Garden for dinner... how does that sound?".
Everything about the way he asks says to the woman "I'm trying to figure out what you want me to do... please help me know how you want me to act, where you want me to take you, and what you want me to say".
This is ATTRACTION DEATH!
men who don't lead, and even worse, try to get a woman to lead, ANNOY THE HELL OUT OF SINGLE WOMEN.
They HATE IT!

4) Using Insecure, Approval-Seeking, Low-Status Posture, Gestures, Voice Tone, And Body Language
There's a term that single, attractive, in-demand women use to describe men who use weak, approval-seeking posture, gestures,
comments, and mannerisms...
The term is "NICE".
"He's nice... but... there's no chemistry."
This is one of those areas that's not easy to talk about.
Since SO DAMN MANY GUYS do this stuff, it's almost impossible to explain.
It's like trying to tell a fish that they're not going to get anywhere in life
if they stay wet.
The fish doesn't even KNOW it's wet in the first place.
But let me try.
This is important.
Go spend a day observing couples.
Go places where couples that have just met spend time together.
Bars, clubs, coffee shops, whatever.
Now watch the GUYS.
Watch how they lean towards the women.
Watch how they raise their eyebrows in exaggerated response to women's comments.
Watch how they slump over, let their shoulders fall forward, and smile fake-ly at whatever the women say.
If you're close enough, listen to how men ask questions and make comments with a voice tone that says "I'm insecure and I'm trying
to be extra nice to compensate for it".
You'll see it EVERYWHERE.
In fact, you'll see it so much that you'll probably write me back to tell me that I'm the one who's crazy, and that since it happens so much, it must be "the right way".
Well, it's not.
If there's one thing that triggers an attractive single woman's WUSS-DAR, it's a man's posture, gestures, eye contact, voice tone, etc.
It all happens in an INSTANT.
Women read this stuff and interpret it as instantly and accurately as you read and interpret the cover of Playboy.
NO ANALYSIS NECESSARY.
I'd say that probably 90% of all men alive today INSTANTLY disqualify themselves with women because of this problem.
Their voice tone, gestures, posture, etc. TELEGRAPH the message that they're a WUSS.
They do a thousand weird little things to let a woman know that they're uncomfortable and "not being themselves".
And you guessed it...
Single women HATE IT!

5) Not Understanding That She's A Woman And You're A Man
I'm about to get philosophical on your ass, so be cool.
When it comes down to it, most men don't understand women.
But the REAL kicker is that most men don't understand MEN, either!
Most guys don't know what it's like to get in touch with their MALE NATURE.
Combine these two issues, and you get a guy who behaves in ways that DO NOT trigger ATTRACTION in women.
Women have a "nature". A female nature.
Men also have a "nature". You guessed it, it's a MALE nature.
Women are coy. They like to play hard to get. They like to enjoy the chase. They love anticipation. They love to "let a guy catch them"...
Men are competitive. Men are dominant. Men like to play rough games, win things, and rule their territory.
Well guess what?
Most men don't BEHAVE like men when they're in the presence of a woman that they "like".
And since most men don't understand female human nature, they don't demonstrate that they "get it" when they're with women that they "like".
Women like men. Men like women. There are POWERFUL causes at play here.
When you're around a woman you like, don't act like a GIRLY-MAN.

Where the Boys Are
By Al Weisel
US Magazine, June 1996, pp. 90-98, 117-118

Male supermodels don't throw tantrums, give attitude or make moviesyet. They're hot right now, but how long will they last?

Imagine you're walking down the street in New York City on a beautiful sunny day when suddenly you notice something strange: People are being nice to you. They're smiling at you. Strangers say hello as they pass. Women lower their sunglasses; men stare into your eyes. This is no dream. You're supermodel Joel West, and everybody wants you.

"I don't think I will ever quite accept the attention," says West, 20, who signed a one-year, seven-figure contract with Calvin Klein last August. "People whispering, talking about me. The acknowledgment of society knowing who I am wherever I go." Of course, West's predicament is not news. Supermodels had been treated like celebrities long before West was launched into the world by the band of his Calvin Klein underwear. What is news is that West, thanks in part to those Calvin's, is one of the first male models to become an international sex object.

Not long ago, the idea of male models as sex objects was almost laughable, if not suspect. Men's fashion represented just a fraction of the industry, and men who worried about their looks were considered, somehow, less masculine. Male models, in turn, were treated as mere props and background-anonymous walk-ons who made far less money than their female counterparts. But changing attitudes toward male beauty - reflected in and even propelled in part by Klein's advertising campaigns-have empowered men in the only profession (besides, perhaps, the world's oldest) in which they had been second-class citizens.

FASHION WEEK IN NEW YORK: AT CALVIN KLEINTHE MOST prestigious of the New York menswear showsmodels listen in rapt attention as Klein recites his pre-show instructions. "Don't look serious," he says. "But no big smiles. You already look like you could wear a $2,000 suit, so you don't have to try to look proud." Klein makes a quick exit, then returns just as quickly. "I just thought of something else," he says. "If there's one word to describe the feeling, think sex."

One of the sexiest models isn't here today. Tyson Beckford, who made history last year as the first African-American male to ink an exclusive deal with a major designer, is prohibited by his contract with Polo Ralph Lauren from doing other designers' shows. So it's up to models like Alex Lundqvist, 24, a sweet-faced Swede with long blond hair and a wispy mustache and goatee, has compelling eyes, clear and blue. Fellow Wilhelmina model Mark Vanderloo is a trim Dutchman with spiky blond hair. At 27, he's the world's highest-paid male model, with an annual income of more than $1 million.

Across the room, Jason Olive, a volleyball player who graduated last year from the University of Hawaii, displays his massive chest. But he's not just showing offhe says he'll be wearing a turtleneck in the show and doesn't want to mess up his makeup. "Why don't you parade around shirtless like Olive?" Lundqvist is asked, and he snaps back, "Because I think it's tacky." Then he reconsiders. "Well, maybe if I was as big as him..." Olive isn't the only model who makes Lundqvist envious. Looking over at Joel West, he whispers, "Did Joel tell you how much money he makes?"

It's natural that West would be the source of jealousy among other models. Last August the small-town boy from Indianola, Iowa, was plucked from obscurity and vaulted to the top tier of male supermodels when he signed on with Calvin Klein. Apparently, though, there is trouble in paradise. "I'm not doing many shows this year," says West, sighing. Last season he was Klein's star model. Now, he says, disappointed at his placement in the show, "I'm 57th."

IN THE LOBBY OF BOSS MODELS, A GIANT BLOWUP OF THE now infamous Calvin Klein underwear ad featuring Joel West looms: "It makes me proud," says West, who has stopped by the agency to pick up his fan mailall of which turns out to be from men." I wish some girls would write me," he says plaintively, quickly adding he doesn't mind having so many male fans. Later, West confesses, "I'm a very trusting person." Which might explain why he wasn't fazed when a photographer approached him at the Mall of America Dairy Queen in Minneapolis while he was eating a Blizzard on an outing with his church group. The photographer asked West, 17 at the time, to model for him. West's mother, Jan Gipple, was more wary, having "heard things about the fashion industry," he says, and insisted on accompanying him. "We had a five-hour drive to get him to [the shoot]," says Gipple. "It's in this abandoned warehouse, and I'm thinking, This is great; we're just going to leave you at an abandoned warehouse with this stranger. I wonder if you're going to be there when we pick you up." The photographer turned out to be aboveboard, but Gipple, 42, a veterinary technician who herself grew up in Indianola, still wasn't convinced West would make it: "In Iowa, what are the chances of your getting anywhere in modeling?"

West, however, with his otherworldly beautylithe, defined body, pouty lips and exotic eyessoon became familiar to anyone who picked up a magazine. But he had no idea just how familiar he would become. In October 1995, a couple of months after he signed on with Calvin Klein, West was propelled to instant notoriety with a controversial underwear campaign featuring him spread-eagled and clad only in his Calvins. The advertisements' sexual frankness made them ripe for attack (especially coming after Klein's much-assailed ad campaign featuring teen-age models a few months earlier), and West became nightly fodder for tabloid TV shows, which camped out in his family's yard in Iowa.

West's father, Rob West, 41, who operates a backhoe for a construction company and hasn't seen much of his son since divorcing Joel's mother when Joel was 14, says, "I. was happy he was making the money, but I didn't really like the ads. They were risqué." Gipple, on the other hand, had a more practical view: "I said, 'It's pretty hard to sell a product if you're not going to show it."' The strongest reaction, surprisingly, came from Linda J. Wachner, CEO of Warnaco, which owns Calvin Klein's underwear division; she publicly excoriated them. "This ad which appeared with this gentleman's legs spread apart was not approved by Warnaco," she said. "There are no plans to use that shot again."

West was shocked by the controversy. "I didn't understand where they were coming from," he says. "I took it very personally." Meanwhile, he had to deal with instant celebrity. "I've lost a lot of my privacy," he says. "There were a few months of adjustment where I was in limbo. I wasn't happy." He denies media reports that the pressure made him flee New York for Iowa. "I love New York," he says. "I purchased a home in Iowa to be close to my family." West shares his new housewith its circular driveway, pillars and fountain in frontwith his maternal grandparents, who take care of it when he's away. "It's like something out of Gone With the Wind," marvels his mother.

West's mother and stepfather, Michael Gipple, a fleet mechanic for the Mid American Energy Company, live just down the road with Joel's 17-year-old brother, Jake. West has nicknamed Jake "Deviant" because of his penchant for mischieflike trying to break into West's laptop. Joel's father, who grew up in and still lives in Indianola, says, "Joel looks like me and takes after his mom. Jake looks like his mom and takes after me. Jake's more wild. Joel's more laid-back."

West's high-school teachers have nothing but nice things to say about him, which isn't surprising since he was voted biggest brown-noser by his class. "Joel always had a ready smile," gushes his chemistry teacher, Irene Bertsch. "He was a very hard worker." She wasn't shocked by the ads. "I saw Joel at several swim meets, and actually there was more covered in the ad than there was in the tiny little Speedos they wear," she says.

But things in Iowa are not quite the same. "I have a lot more friends and family members," West says cynically. "People coming out of the woodwork." He says that people who once thought he was "a geeky bookworm" now think he's "cool," including his girlfriend, Joy Ashbaugh. She ignored West when they attended high school together"She was in the elite, the cool girls who hung out with the cool guys," he saysand started dating him only after he became a successful model. "I've stayed the same," he says. "The only thing that's changed is the people around me." His mother, however, has detected some changes in West. "He may be more leery of people than he used to be," she says. "Since I'm not familiar with the media, Joel kept telling me, 'Don't tell them everything, Mom, because things get twisted.'" But she also thinks "it made him very worldly. He acts a lot older than any 20-year-old I've met."

Otherwise he's the same kid she raised. "He's possessed to excel in everything he does," she says. "He drives everyone crazy being an overachiever." But there's also another side to him. "He's the biggest romantic," she says. "For his girlfriend at Thanksgiving he filled his room with balloons, had a candlelight dinner and cooked this gourmet meal. I'm thinking, Most guys would just pull up, honk, and you run out."

ONE MIGHT THINK THAT BEING AN OBJECT OF DESIRE WOULD make it easy to find a mate. But most models say maintaining a relationship is one of the difficulties of the job. Tyson Beckford, who has dated Chilli from TLC, says that in addition to the fact that "you're never home," jealousy can be a big problem. "I've dated girls, and they'll be like, 'Oh, she was looking at you,' and I'll be like, 'No, she wasn't. She was just being nice.'" One of the best things about the woman he recently started dating is that she's not jealous. "We went to a pre-Grammy party, and all these girls were coming up to me, but she was cool about it," he says.

Some models end up with the people who best know what their lives are like: other models. "Another model knows what you have to go through," says Vanderloo. "And they aren't the ugliest girls in the world, either." Ask Alex Lundqvist. He dated supermodel Nadja Auermann for more than a year (although the relationship ended in February).

For models who aren't ready to settle down, there are plenty of opportunities for fleeting pleasures. "One time I was dog tired and went out to a club for a drink," recalls 24-year-old Jason Lewis, who has been modeling for three years. "A woman recognized who I was and basically offered to go to bed with me. I said, 'That's great, but I'm really tired,' and walked out." And when he's not so tired? "I've certainly had relationships with women that lasted an evening," he says, "but I don't screw around that much. I don't want anyone greeting me with bulls, and I don't think it's fair of me to do the same."

Of course, women aren't the only ones who have crushes on guys like Lewis. The top male models, however, don't seem either publicly or privately to identify as gay. Not that they're homophobic, either. "I've had men have crushes on me," says Atlanta native Mark Fisher, 20, who is currently appearing in the new Polo Sport campaign. "I treat them the same as anybody else."

"TEN YEARS AGO, THE STANDARD MALE MODEL WAS PERFECT face, perfect body. Boring, really," says casting agent Leslie Simitch. "I think now there's a much wider range of what we consider attractive in a man." In the '70s, the elegant, square-jawed GQ look was in. In the '80s, renowned fashion photographer Bruce Weber popularized more-athletic bodies with pumped-up pectorals and chiseled abdominals. "Many male models now are scrawny," says Simitch. "And a lot have long hair."

But the idea that men can be just as sexy as womenand that male models can be marketed as sex objectswhose men's division is the largest in the worldand his New York director, Jason Kanner, have been doing everything in their power to cultivate this phenomenon and make it last. One of Kanner's first assignments when he joined the agency in 1991 was to manage Marcus Schenkenberg, now 27, who was soon to appear in a 116-page advertising supplement for Calvin Klein photographed by Bruce Weber. In the most famous shot, Schenkenberg is naked in a shower, his ripped torso dripping wet, and holding jeans in front of what he modestly refers to in Swedish-filtered English as his "fireman." Kanner had a radical plan for promoting Schenkenberg: Market him like a female model. The agency raised his rates, from $3,000 to as much as $20,000 a day, and was more selective about the jobs he took." He'd do three or four campaigns instead of 12 but get more money," explains Kanner. "This was done with women, never with men." The strategy worked: Schenkenberg was in such demand after the campaign, his rates went up, which helped increase rates for other male models as well.

One February afternoon, Kanner is looking through a sea of photographs spread out before him. He's just returned from scouting in Milan, where he chose five of the 500 men he saw. Kanner points out the attributes of the men he selected: the "sunken cheekbones, ivory skin and jet-black hair" of one, "the perfect nose, full lips and great jaw line" of another. Then, sounding like a high-school misfit getting revenge on the popular guys, he sizes up the rejects. One model "looks like a schoolteacher," he says. Of another he complains, "There's way too many odd things happening on this guy's face." Kanner knows he has an advantage over them. "When I'm 60," he says, "I'm still going to have a job."

Looks aren't everything, though, even in modeling. Jennifer Starr, who was Bruce Weber's casting assistant for four years before going free-lance recently, says that she looks for qualities that are more than skin-deep. "At first it's the physical look," she says. "But after that it's all attitude. When I find someone on the street and take a Polaroid of them, I'm looking to see how they react to me and the camera- if they're stiff, how they hold themselves. You have to be comfortable with who you are." But not too comfortable. "Sometimes after you've been in this business awhile," she says, "you've got it down, and that's not interesting to work with anymore. That spontaneity is gone."

THE STANDARDS OF BEAUTY, LIKE THOSE OF FASHION, DO change. But some models, like Tyson (Beckford is his last name, but like some of the female supermodels, he eschews his surname), are so stunningly beautiful that it doesn't matter if their look is "in" at the moment. Although he's 6-foot-1, Tyson looks smaller in person than in photographs, but his face is even more breathtaking, with Asian eyes, full lips and silky, dark skin. When he smiles, he can look as gentle as a kitten; when he frowns, as mean as a rattlesnake. Before shooting a commercial for Polo, Tyson changes clothes, taking off the baggy B-boy jeans he prefers and dancing around as he struggles to pull tight jeans over his massive thighs. Then he takes off his shirt, revealing jaw-dropping muscles as well as something one never sees under the tailored suits he wears so elegantlya rebellious streak. After he signed a Polo Ralph Lauren contract for a reported $550,000 last year, Tyson covered his arms with tattoos.

Dragons are etched on his biceps. Both forearms have Chinese inscriptions. He translates the sentence on his right forearm, a tribute to his older brother Patrick, who was murdered in a mugging four years ago. But Tyson declines to decipher the message on the other arm: "It's a secret," he says, "for me and my homies. We all got the same thing." The tattoo illustrates why he will probably survive no matter what happens to him in the treacherous waters of the fashion world. In English it reads, "Don't trust anybody."

While watching a comedian in New York's Washington Square Park in the summer of 1991, Tyson was approached by an editor for the hip-hop magazine The Source who offered him a modeling job. "This guy goes to me, 'You got pretty eyes,'" Tyson, 25, recalls. "I'm thinking, Must be some porno magazine:" But then the editor said something that piqued Tyson's interest. "The opportunities," he said, "are endless:" Two days later, Tyson had his first gig. But because he really wanted a job in the music industry, Tyson drifted out of modeling. Patrick encouraged him to pursue it. "In modeling," his brother told him coincidentally, "the opportunities are endless."

Tyson was born in the Bronx, N.Y., but the family moved to Jamaica when he was just a baby. His mother, Hilory Dixon, who once won third place in a Miss Jamaica contest, moved them back to New York when Tyson was 7 after separating from his father. She later married Lloyd Dixon, who worked for a collection agency and was always calling people up saying, "You owe us money," Tyson remembers. "I grew up not really having a father image," he says. "I used to think my stepfather was the meanest man in the world." Tyson resented being forced by Dixon, who now works for Citibank, to learn how to do taxes for the money he earned from his paper route when he was 13. "I said I'm never gonna need to know how to deal with that," he says. "But now I'm dealing with it. I didn't understand when I was a kid. He's still in there with me today. He means a lot to me."

When Tyson first moved to New York, the other kids made fun of the way he looked and talked. "I was this dark-skinned Chinese kid with an Afro who spoke with a heavy Jamaican accent," says Tyson, whose paternal grandmother is Chinese. "If you think about it, it's kind of funny. They called me Mr. Chin." Because he spoke Jamaican patois, he says, "I had to take classes to learn to speak so-called English. Since I couldn't speak too well, I had to stay back a year." After graduating at 19, he attended a community college but dropped out after one semester. Then, in August 1992, Tyson's brother Patrick was murdered. "I got in my own shell and didn't want to do nothing," he says.

A year later Tyson saw actor Kadeem Hardison on The Arsenio Hall Show talking about his mother Bethann's modeling agency. Recalling his brother's words about opportunities in modeling, Tyson went to see her.

Hardison was impressed with Tyson but cautious. "You never know who's going to take off, because you have such racism in the industry," she says." Most fashion people don't know the beauty of blacks, so you don't want to encourage someone too much. "Hardison herself was a modeland as one of the first successful black models in the '60s, a pioneer. With dreadlocks down to the small of her back and a radiant smile, she's stunning, and as tough as she is charming. When she was 19, Hardison dropped out of fashion briefly to become a corrections officer after being "inspired by The Snake Pit [the 1948 film about mental illness]," she recalls, laughing.

In the Facebook age, it appears everyone is your friend and fewer and fewer pay taxes.

By Geisel/Lunch

Say youre a second homeowner who owns a condo in Mammoth Lakes. For years, youve signed up for some sort of rental program. A property management company has rented the place, taken a commission for their trouble, withheld the appropriate amount of room tax to pay the Town, and has ultimately paid you about half of what the condo rented for.
Then, suddenly, you are introduced to a lovely website called craigslist, where you can list the property for free, set your own price, skip the middleman, and make out like a bandit. So what if the guests stack the unit, or bring too many cars. So what if room tax is conveniently left unpaid. As James Brown said, I got mine. Dont worry about his.
Well, Mr. Craigslist Man, it appears his has finally started to worry about his.
At the Mammoth Lakes Town Council meeting on Wednesday, Council voted unanimously to begin operations on illegal condo and home rentals. Council also voted to further educate property renters about the abcs of T.O.T. (room tax) compliance. They also voted to set up a snitch hotline, although we really dont understand why theyd go to the extra expense if people can just call Lunch at 937.4613.
Lunch also suggested anyone busted by the sting should have their names published in the local newspapers, but that recommendation was not heeded.
*Ed. note: Cmon. Lets run a weekly Madoff with my T.O.T. feature.
Several members of the lodging community spoke about the proliferation of rentals, which they say has tripled this year.
Theoretically (in the past, anyway), an owner-guest was someone the owner knew, and being friends, wouldnt charge (although maybe the guest would spring for a case of beer and bring a few babes along thats always nice).
These days, however, the term owner-guest has been broadened to include anyone who may happen to visit your vrbo (vacation rental by owner website) listing or whom you may otherwise chat up in the condo jacuzzi.
Those members of the lodging community who spoke Wednesday said owner-guest nights, which used to comprise 10 to 15% of all booked room nights, now comprise 50% or higher.
Shoulda-Bin-A-Cowboys Steve Schwind said that in 2008, he booked 6,811 traditional rental nights and 6,508 owner-guest nights. And its gone up the first two months of this year, he added.
This isnt about T.O.T. leakage. The dam has broken.
A spokesperson for Mammoth Reservations said she estimated theyre currently booking 60% owner-guest nights.
The likely result? I think youll see a huge drop in occupancy numbers [this year], said Tourism and Recreation Commissioner Teri Stehlik, who manages Seasons 4. For a town which relies so heavily on T.O.T. to finance its operations (accounting for more than 60% of municipal revenue), this issue could have perilous implications.
But what has really galvanized the lodging community in recent weeks was the news that the Town planned to spend $8,000 auditing current T.O.T. remitters in compliance while continuing to ignore the mushrooming illegal rental problem.

Lodging Association takes action

Prior to the Council meeting, Town staff held two meetings with members of the Lodging Association to prepare its T.O.T. enforcement recommendations.
Cheryl Witherill of the 1849 Condominiums frames the issue as being about enforcement and education. Witherill said the 80 percent response to the Towns advisory letter on T.O.T. compliance sent three years ago was a good start, but said nothing has been done in the years since to look into the 20 percent who didnt respond. The letters, she said, should be mailed out to property owners annually, especially to new owners in town or if properties change hands.
The lodging community is open to assist where it can, she said, but its the Towns responsibility to enforce [the codes]. Then she got tougher.
Witherill further suggested a sting operation of some kind that would target owners, not guests. She then took aim at the audits. The Town should spend the audit money on non-compliance, not targeting those already in compliance, Witherill stated, adding that the lodging community is already setting up the means to police itself. Of the 15-18 participants in the meetings with Town staff (out of more than 60 monthly remitters), Witherill estimated that illegal rentals known to just those 15 or so could amount to as much as $260,000 in lost T.O.T. from condos alone.
That figure, she said, doesnt include any amounts that may be known to the rest of the remitter group, or begin to account for illegal single-family home rentals. Witherill further dismissed the audits as being time consuming and counterproductive, and asked that they be suspended immediately.
Council agreed Wednesday and postponed the audit program indefinitely.
The audit money should go to enforcement, said Councilman Neil McCarroll.
Town Finance Director Brad Koehn had pushed for the audits because they generally cost between $5,000-$6,000 each, and typically yield about $30,000 in revenue from interest and penalites. He did, however, say that the largest single collection so far amounted to approximately $100,000.
Koehn, however, eventually had to concede that when youre facing a firing squad, its pointless to wonder whos got the blank. The proposed audits not only met with solid resistance from the lodging community, but also the Tourism and Recreation Commission, and even to a certain extent T R Dept. Director Danna Stroud.
One concern Im hearing from the lodging partners is that the audit is not a good mechanism for identifying illegal renters, Stroud advised commissioners. Certainly theres an eductational component, but [the audits] timing is questionable.

Buck the trend

Judy Farnetti of Mammoth Sierra Reservations thought more attention should be paid to the impact of the Internet. We have to realize theres a trend setting in, Farnetti said. All this is happening with the ease of online booking engines. The result, she found, was that private homeowners can undercut legitimate rentals by up to 50%. re in a huge downward spiral.
Stroud said that at the moment, no legal recourse exists for prosecuting virtual rent-by-owner types of web sites. No money changes hands there, and thats the key. They just facilitate the meetings between the parties.
Diane Stillwell of 101 Great Escapes agreed, though she allowed that many homeowners may be oblivious to the harm theyre doing. Nonetheless, she indicated seeing a threefold increase in illegal rentals this past year alone.
Schwind chimed in again, first thanking Stroud for being one of the first Tourism people thats listened to [the lodging community]. He went on to suggest that lodging community is due for some traction on the compliance issue, citing the recent DIF reductions won by the Contractors Association. They represent 9% of the budget. We represent 62% of the budget and were trying to increase revenues by upwards of $260,000, Schwind said.
Ted Bettker, however, was more direct. Find out what you need and put some people on the cross, he said. Not everyones going to pay everything they owe, Bettker continued, but when they get nailed for tens of thousands of dollars in fines, interest and penalties, it will make an impression ... If youre not going to get serious about enforcement, walk away from this issue and spend the [audit] dollars on marketing.
In fairness to Koehn, several opinions suggested that the audits themselves werent the problem; its the timing of them that drew objections.
The audit should be tabled. Right now its just wasting money, commented Commissioner Stehlik. We should have all our ducks in a row before an audit.
What type of ducks those are is still a larger question. New Tourism and Recreation Commissioner Svendsen opined that perhaps an anonymous tip line or standardized owner-occupancy tax might help.
There have to be other ways to get at this thing besides a sting, Svendsen said. Stroud agreed. A sting should be just one part of a larger effort, she said.
Lodging policing itself is fine, but the Town needs a mechanism to enforce the code when the offenders are turned in, Stehlik stated.
Maybe now were finally coming ot the end of this issue, remarked Tourism Commissioner Dieter Fiebiger on Tuesday, who pointed out that illegal rentals are going for not just hundreds, but thousands of dollars on peak weekends. He also said the audits should wait. Once the enforcement issue is sufficiently addressed, then go ahead and audit.
T R Commission Chairman Bill Sauser said he wants to make sure any sting money recovered is put right back into enforcement, not just appropriated by the Town for other purposes. Sauser did, however, emphasize that no matter what the methodology used, the guest experience still needs to be good, and suggested re-examining the ordinance section on rentals from the top down.

Council Briefs

Ali Feinberg made public comment which complained about ticketing for parking on Sherwin Creek Rd. to access recreation and walk dogs. Councilman McCarroll assured Feinberg that the Town is working on a deal with Chadmars Chuck Lande to create a parking area.
Councilman Skip Harvey said the idea is finally being pushed to extend the transportation route from Reds Meadow to the Village.
Council deliberated extensively on a new set of mission guidelines which reduced the gobbledygook nicey-nice nonsense bullshit in the General Plan from six pages to two. Goals, core objectives, mission statements ... you get the drift.
Velveeta was proud of the accomplishment. Eastman not so much.
These terms make my eyes glaze over, he said.
McCarroll did admit that maybe its an age thing, but he wasnt so fond of all the flowery platitudes either. He did support the Moving Mammoth Forward agenda bill hoping to would facilitate the decision-making process.
Ed. note: Hey, Neil. Its not an age thing. Its just long-winded buffoonery edited down to sitcom length.

petite Asian woman), and Jesus. All three speak as the oracles of God, giving insights and explanations neither found in nor consistent with Scripture. Some enthusiastic readers say the words and interactions with the Godhead have comforted them, answered difficult questions about their faith, and made the person of the Lord seem all the more real to them.

The reality is that out of his own imagination the author has put his words into the mouths of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, which are then perceived by multitudes as thus saith the Lord. This is not only a bogus secondhand source but the arrogance of false prophecy at least and blasphemy and idolatry at worst. It is man, making God in his own fallen image.

More influential among evangelicals than The Shack is Mel Gibsons The Passion of the Christ, which became a huge box-office success, thanks mostly to evangelical support. Available now as a definitive edition DVD, it features, for those who want the official Catholic theology of the film explained, a discussion with director Mel Gibson, along with a Catholic apologist and two Catholic priests who were the films theological consultants. The movie has a false gospel, a false Christ, and is loaded with supposedly biblical scenes from the minds of Gibson and a Catholic nun given to mystical hallucinations (See Showtime for the Sheep?). Yet it continues to be used extensively by evangelical churches, especially during Lent and Easter week.

In response to What do you think of Jesus? millions who saw the movie now mistakenly believe that: He was confronted by Satan in the Garden of Gethsemane; He was thrown from a bridge by His captors and dangled from a chain; His image was captured for posterity on the veil of a woman named Veronica; as His cross began to fall, it levitated to keep Him from hitting the ground, and, most contradictory to the gospel, it was the merciless scourging He suffered that paid for the sins of humanity.

These are only a few of the unbiblical images that the world and many in the church have added to their perception of Jesus. Movies are todays most popular form of disseminating superficial information and misinformation. Feature films about Jesus and God have put erroneous ideas about them into the hearts and minds of the masses: Jesus Christ Superstar; The Last Temptation of Christ; Bruce Almighty; The Da Vinci Code; Judas; Oh God!;Oh God, Book II; Jesus of Nazareth, to name but a few.

What about more biblically accurate Bible movies--those that take the words directly from Scripture, for example? When you have an actor portraying Jesus who says only the words of Jesus that are found in the Bible, does that make the portrayal more accurate? More accurate than what? Does the actor actually look like Jesus, or talk like Jesus, or reflect the godly demeanor of Jesus? More critically, can he accurately imitate the God-Man, the Creator of the Universe, the One in whom all things consist? Even if he could, which is impossible, it would still be an imitation! Furthermore, he will leave millions, including believers, with an image of a false

A few such movies are sincere attempts at communicating the content and stories of the Scriptures through visual media. Although sincere, they are doomed to failure regarding truth. Why? In addition to what was noted above, the Bible is an objective revelation from God given in words. All attempts at visually translating those words abandon objective revelation in favor of subjective interpretation. Take a passage of Scripture, for instance, and have five people give their understanding of the verse based upon the context, the grammatical structure, and the normal meaning of the words. More often than not, the interpretations will be quite similar. Should one of the five come up with something very different, it can be corrected by simply checking it out objectively against the context, grammar, and accepted definitions of the words in the passage. On the other hand, what if five artists were to translate the passage visually? The result would be five very subjective and quite different renderings. Even if only one artist visually translated the verse and four people tried to interpret the image, you would likely have four different views because the medium has no objective criteria comparable to that of words. Are you getting the here? Imagery is not the way to communicate objective truth.

God did not draw pictures on the tablets He gave to Moses. His continual command to him and to His other prophets was to write down His instructions. Visual imagery was at the heart of pagan worship used by people whose lives centered around idols--the chief by-product being unbridled superstition. The same was true of the medieval Roman Catholic and Orthodox Churches, who fed their followers images rather than teaching them to read and write (as the Jews had done successfully from the time of Abraham). Even today, superstition continues to be rampant within those visually oriented religious systems.

Where does the world get its ideas about Jesus? Most non-Christians only know what theyve picked up from sources they regard as Christian, although rarely is the content biblical. More than a billion Muslims, for example, hold a view of Jesus that Muhammad gleaned from questionable Christians. The Quran states that Isa (Jesus) is not the Son of God because Allah has no son. Isas birth took place under a palm tree, and, while still a babe, he cried out from his cradle that he was a servant of Allah, who had given him a revelation and made him a prophet. He did not die upon the cross; someone took his place--all in contradiction to the Bible.

Many Jews put stock in the alleged Talmudic stories that oppose the gospel accounts. They have been taught that Jesus was an illegitimate child who was born to a harlot and a scoundrel. Declaring himself to be the Messiah, he performed healings by sorcery and consequently was stoned and then hung on a tree for his magic and blasphemy for claiming to be the Son of God.

Hindus have added Jesus as one more avatar, or god, among their 330 million gods. All of their gurus who have become popular in the West--from Maharishi Mahesh Yogi to Rajneesh--preach their own Buddhists, such as the 14th Dalai Lama, regard Jesus as a bodhisattva, or enlightened god, among multitudes of gods reincarnated for the service of humanity.

Incredibly, the above erroneous beliefs about Jesus are fostered within professing Christianity by a popular practice among Emerging Church fellowships. Some invite the followers of the world religions for in order to learn more about Jesus from a pluralistic perspective. The goal seems to be to establish a Jesus who is acceptable to people of all faiths--or no faith. A common refrain heard from the Emergent communities is We love Jesus but not His church. Certainly, as the church has compromised with the world, there is much not to like. Yet sadly, for many, it is neither the biblical Jesus whom they love nor the biblical church that they support. Some are under the delusion that Jesus is becoming more respected in our culture. That has never been the case for the Jesus revealed in Scripture.

It is hard for anyone who has a personal, intimate relationship with Jesus Christ to accept that the world hates Him, this One whom we love so much. It was difficult for me, and I still struggle with that. How could anyone reject the One who loves us more than we could ever comprehend, and whose sacrifice for those He created is so wonderfully unfathomable? Such hatred is often masked and develops progressively and by stealth. It is found in Satans strategy that began with Yea, hath God said...? His dialogue with Eve provided a ripe opportunity to subvert the truth about God and His command. Eve bought the Adversarys lying alteration of Gods character and his denial of the consequence of disobedience. Her offspring down through the ages have done likewise.

Yet that reality in the guise of condescension and mockery nearly moved me to despair as I reviewed a particular episode of Fox TVs The Family Guy.

night and collapsed Wednesday, with one Democrat calling the partys preferred leader a lu-lu man.
State Sen. Malcolm Smith (D-St. Albans), who was supported for Senate leader by most members of the conference, announced Wednesday that he is ceasing negotiations with three dissident Democrats known as the Gang of Three.
Smith said that morality was more important than being in the majority, and that he was unwilling to discuss marriage equality as part of a deal with the three dissident Democratic senators -- Pedro Espada, Jr (Bronx) Carl Kruger (Brooklyn), Ruben Diaz Sr. (Bronx), reported Newsdays Melissa Mansfield.
Daz, a Pentecostal minister, strongly opposes same-sex marriage and has said he wouldnt support any senate leader who would allow a vote on the issue to be taken in the upper chamber.
Democrats were elated when they captured 32 of the 62 seats in the election last month, winning a majority in the chamber for the first time in more than four decades. But the thin margin of their majority meant that the Gang of Three wielded unusual power.
All three flirted in the past two weeks with backing a Republican for majority leader.
By last Thursday, however, the Gang of Three appeared to have successfully persuaded Smith to give them plum posts and a new leadership structure for the Senate. Under the deal negotiated with the help of Gov. David Paterson, the jobs of president pro tem and Senate majority leader, usually held by one person, would be split, with Espada taking the majority leader post and Smith taking the top spot, according to the Times.
But on Saturday Smith faced fierce backlash from his members who thought he gave away too much to three dissidents who they believed were holding the conference hostage, New York Daily News reports.
Wednesdays flurry of pronouncements undid the plan and might also mean that the Senate could have a new leader who was not a Democrat.
Malcolm Smith is not ready for prime time, Espada said on Wednesday. Right after we left the room with the governor and all the others present, he totally went about eroding the agreement.
The Gang of Three signaled Tuesday night that they were backing off their support of Smith for leader of the chamber, accusing him of reneging on an agreement reached last week, reports New York Daily News.
I think its in trouble again, Diaz said Tuesday night.
That turned out to be an understatement.
On Wednesday, Espada accused Smith of negotiating in bad faith. Not only does he walk away from the truth, but he believes his own lies, he said of Smith. s been giving out lu-lus all week. Hes the lu-lu man, not Pedro Espada. I never wanted a lu-lu. I wanted a real substantive job description
On Wednesday Smith said that after more than a month of negotiations and offering the group top leadership posts, he had come to realize that the three senators were more interested in their own power than in the good of the state, New York Times reports.
It became clear to me over time that this was more about personal interest and not the reform that Senate Democrats ran on, Smith said during a news conference.
Referring to the issue of marriage equality, he said that real reform cannot and should not ever include limiting the civil rights of any New Yorkers. Those issues should be part of the legislative process, according to the Times.
He was asked by a reporter, You really thought this was about reform?
Yes, sir, Mr. Smith replied.
