Hundreds of active pharmaceutical ingredients are used in a variety of manufacturing, including drugmaking: For example, lithium is used to make ceramics and treat bipolar disorder; nitroglycerin is a heart drug and also used in explosives; copper shows up in everything from pipes to contraceptives.Federal and industry officials say they don't know the extent to which pharmaceuticals are released by U.S. manufacturers because no one tracks them as drugs. But a close analysis of 20 years of federal records found that, in fact, the government unintentionally keeps data on a few, allowing a glimpse of the pharmaceuticals coming from factories.As part of its ongoing PharmaWater investigation about trace concentrations of pharmaceuticals in drinking water, AP identified 22 compounds that show up on two lists: the EPA monitors them as industrial chemicals that are released into rivers, lakes and other bodies of water under federal pollution laws, while the Food and Drug Administration classifies them as active pharmaceutical ingredients.The data don't show precisely how much of the 271 million pounds comes from drugmakers versus other manufacturers; also, the figure is a massive undercount because of the limited federal government tracking.To date, drugmakers have dismissed the suggestion that their manufacturing contributes significantly to what's being found in water. Federal drug and water regulators agree.But some researchers say the lack of required testing amounts to a 'don't ask, don't tell' policy about whether drugmakers are contributing to water pollution."It doesn't pass the straight-face test to say pharmaceutical manufacturers are not emitting any of the compounds they're creating," said Kyla Bennett, who spent 10 years as an EPA enforcement officer before becoming an ecologist and environmental attorney.Pilot studies in the U.S. and abroad are now confirming those doubts.Last year, the AP reported that trace amounts of a wide range of pharmaceuticals including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones have been found in American drinking water supplies. Including recent findings in Dallas, Cleveland and Maryland's Prince George's and Montgomery counties, pharmaceuticals have been detected in the drinking water of at least 51 million Americans.Most cities and water providers still do not test. Some scientists say that wherever researchers look, they will find pharma-tainted water.Consumers are considered the biggest contributors to the contamination. We consume drugs, then excrete what our bodies don't absorb. Other times, we flush unused drugs down toilets. The AP also found that an estimated 250 million pounds of pharmaceuticals and contaminated packaging are thrown away each year by hospitals and long-term care facilities.Researchers have found that even extremely diluted concentrations of drugs harm fish, frogs and other aquatic species. Also, researchers report that human cells fail to grow normally in the laboratory when exposed to trace concentrations of certain drugs. Some scientists say they are increasingly concerned that the consumption of combinations of many drugs, even in small amounts, could harm humans over decades.Utilities say the water is safe. Scientists, doctors and the EPA say there are no confirmed human risks associated with consuming minute concentrations of drugs. But those experts also agree that dangers cannot be ruled out, especially given the emerging research. Two common industrial chemicals that are also pharmaceuticals the antiseptics phenol and hydrogen peroxide account for 92 percent of the 271 million pounds identified as coming from drugmakers and other manufacturers. Both can be toxic and both are considered to be ubiquitous in the environment.However, the list of 22 includes other troubling releases of chemicals that can be used to make drugs and other products: 8 million pounds of the skin bleaching cream hydroquinone, 3 million pounds of nicotine compounds that can be used in quit-smoking patches, 10,000 pounds of the antibiotic tetracycline hydrochloride. Others include treatments for head lice and worms.Residues are often released into the environment when manufacturing equipment is cleaned.A small fraction of pharmaceuticals also leach out of landfills where they are dumped. Pharmaceuticals released onto land include the chemo agent fluorouracil, the epilepsy medicine phenytoin and the sedative pentobarbital sodium. The overall amount may be considerable, given the volume of what has been buried 572 million pounds of the 22 monitored drugs since 1988.In one case, government data shows that in Columbus, Ohio, pharmaceutical maker Boehringer Ingelheim Roxane Inc. discharged an estimated 2,285 pounds of lithium carbonate which is considered slightly toxic to aquatic invertebrates and freshwater fish to a local wastewater treatment plant between 1995 and 2006. Company spokeswoman Marybeth C. McGuire said the pharmaceutical plant, which uses lithium to make drugs for bipolar disorder, has violated no laws or regulations. McGuire said all the lithium discharged, an annual average of 190 pounds, was lost when residues stuck to mixing equipment were washed down the drain. Pharmaceutical company officials point out that active ingredients represent profits, so there's a huge incentive not to let any escape. They also say extremely strict manufacturing regulations albeit aimed at other chemicals help prevent leakage, and that whatever traces may get away are handled by onsite wastewater treatment."Manufacturers have to be in compliance with all relevant environmental laws," said Alan Goldhammer, a scientist and vice president at the industry trade group Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America.Goldhammer conceded some drug residues could be released in wastewater, but stressed "it would not cause any environmental issues because it was not a toxic substance at the level that it was being released at."Several big drugmakers were asked this simple question: Have you tested wastewater from your plants to find out whether any active pharmaceuticals are escaping, and if so what have you found?No drugmaker answered directly."Based on research that we have reviewed from the past 20 years, pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities are not a significant source of pharmaceuticals that contribute to environmental risk," GlaxoSmithKline said in a statement.AstraZeneca spokeswoman Kate Klemas said the company's manufacturing processes "are designed to avoid, or otherwise minimize the loss of product to the environment" and thus "ensure that any residual losses of pharmaceuticals to the environment that do occur are at levels that would be unlikely to pose a threat to human health or the environment."One major manufacturer, Pfizer Inc., acknowledged that it tested some of its wastewater but outside the United States.The company's director of hazard communication and environmental toxicology, Frank Mastrocco, said Pfizer has sampled effluent from some of its foreign drug factories. Without disclosing details, he said the results left Pfizer "confident that the current controls and processes in place at these facilities are adequately protective of human health and the environment."It's not just the industry that isn't testing.FDA spokesman Christopher Kelly noted that his agency is not responsible for what comes out on the waste end of drug factories. At the EPA, acting assistant administrator for water Mike Shapiro whose agency's Web site says pharmaceutical releases from manufacturing are "well defined and controlled" did not mention factories as a source of pharmaceutical pollution when asked by the AP how drugs get into drinking water."Pharmaceuticals get into water in many ways," he said in a written statement. "It's commonly believed the majority come from human and animal excretion. A portion also comes from flushing unused drugs down the toilet or drain; a practice EPA generally discourages."His position echoes that of a line of federal drug and water regulators as well as drugmakers, who concluded in the 1990s before highly sensitive tests now used had been developed that manufacturing is not a meaningful source of pharmaceuticals in the environment.Pharmaceutical makers typically are excused from having to submit an environmental review for new products, and the FDA has never rejected a drug application based on potential environmental impact. Also at play are pressures not to delay potentially lifesaving drugs. What's more, because the EPA hasn't concluded at what level, if any, pharmaceuticals are bad for the environment or harmful to people, drugmakers almost never have to report the release of pharmaceuticals they produce."The government could get a national snapshot of the water if they chose to," said Jennifer Sass, a senior scientist for the Natural Resources Defense Council, "and it seems logical that we would want to find out what's coming out of these plants."Ajit Ghorpade, an environmental engineer who worked for several major pharmaceutical companies before his current job helping run a wastewater treatment plant, said drugmakers have no impetus to take measurements that the government doesn't require."Obviously nobody wants to spend the time or their dime to prove this," he said. "It's like asking me why I don't drive a hybrid car? Why should I? It's not required." After contacting the nation's leading drugmakers and filing public records requests, the AP found two federal agencies that have tested.Both the EPA and the U.S. Geological Survey have studies under way comparing sewage at treatment plants that receive wastewater from drugmaking factories against sewage at treatment plants that do not.Preliminary USGS results, slated for publication later this year, show that treated wastewater from sewage plants serving drug factories had significantly more medicine residues. Data from the EPA study show a disproportionate concentration in wastewater of an antibiotic that a major Michigan factory was producing at the time the samples were taken.Meanwhile, other researchers recorded concentrations of codeine in the southern reaches of the Delaware River that were at least 10 times higher than the rest of the river.The scientists from the Delaware River Basin Commission won't have to look far when they try to track down potential sources later this year. One mile from the sampling site, just off shore of Pennsville, N.J., there's a pipe that spits out treated wastewater from a municipal plant. The plant accepts sewage from a pharmaceutical factory owned by Siegfried Ltd. The factory makes codeine."We have implemented programs to not only reduce the volume of waste materials generated but to minimize the amount of pharmaceutical ingredients in the water," said Siegfried spokeswoman Rita van Eck.Another codeine plant, run by Johnson Johnson subsidiary Noramco Inc., is about seven miles away. A Noramco spokesman acknowledged that the Wilmington, Del., factory had voluntarily tested its wastewater and found codeine in trace concentrations thousands of times greater than what was found in the Delaware River. "The amounts of codeine we measured in the wastewater, prior to releasing it to the City of Wilmington, are not considered to be hazardous to the environment," said a company spokesman.In another instance, equipment-cleaning water sent down the drain of an Upsher-Smith Laboratories, Inc. factory in Denver consistently contains traces of warfarin, a blood thinner, according to results obtained under a public records act request. Officials at the company and the Denver Metro Wastewater Reclamation District said they believe the concentrations are safe.Warfarin, which also is a common rat poison and pesticide, is so effective at inhibiting growth of aquatic plants and animals it's actually deliberately introduced to clean plants and tiny aquatic animals from ballast water of ships."With regard to wastewater management we are subject to a variety of federal, state and local regulation and oversight," said Joel Green, Upsher-Smith's vice president and general counsel. "And we work hard to maintain systems to promote compliance."Baylor University professor Bryan Brooks, who has published more than a dozen studies related to pharmaceuticals in the environment, said assurances that drugmakers run clean shops are not enough."I have no reason to believe them or not believe them," he said. "We don't have peer-reviewed studies to support or not support their claims.

It all started in 2002 when I still had AOLand was allowed only 1 hour of internet a day. I would use it to go into the music chatroom on AOL and pretend to be someone else. Someone I totally made up, but whose life was far more interesting than mine. I didn't get too attached to it and found other things to do by the time I was a senior and we got rid of AOL and got comcast later that year. Ihad unlimited access to the internet but Iplayed neopets every chance II forgot about chatrooms and instant messenger until I went off to college in fall 2003. Freshmen couldn't have cars and I was a social recluse so there wasn't much for me to do but stay in my room. The internet was down for nearly a month because of a virus a freshman brought in with their new computer that ate its way through the routers. Once internet access was restored, however, I downloaded AIM and created a new persona for new people to love.
I called myself Blake, born on March 10, 1986, an 17 year old only child from Maryland who moved to Sacramento California just a couple years ago and loved Good Charlotte and Blink 182. I claimed I was so smart that Iskipped 9th grade. I made up some pretty outrageous things during the first few days to make myself appear worth knowing, because who would ever want to know Robin, an 18 year old college Freshman from Richmond, Virginia who never even left the country, let alone the East Coast. I was a boring person. Boring and ordinary. The first few days I used AIM and its chatrooms, Icouldn't tell the difference between music0 and music1, until a guy named Joe from Michigan told me to come into music0. I was already making friends. People liked me. I liked that. I should've stopped after a few days, but I got so attached that I would stay up all night and miss class so I could make up the sleep that I missed talking to Carrie, Michelle, and Joe the night before.
At first I was worried that Iwould be found out. That someone would track my IP or ask for pictures that I didn't have, or want to talk to me on the phone. It would've been easier that way; I could've just stopped getting online. I could've made a new screen name and I could've been honest. The drama that unfolded over the next few months certainly wouldn't have happened if Iweren't such an attention whore.
I developed a particularly close bond with a girl named Carrie, from New Jersey and one day she confessed to liking me a lot. So much so that it strained our friendship and caused her to lie to me that she was over it. It made talking a little easier but I tried to blow it out of proportion and milk the drama for all it was worth. I complained to as many people as I could about how appalled and hurt I was that she didn't think I deserved to know the truth, and that she couldn't be straight with her feelings about me. It made me sound a lot more trustworthy if I got that upset over someone else's lies.Iadded a twist to the whole situation by claiming to be in love with a girl named Jen, whom I called Smithifer. It was our own little e-triangle. It was some drama, but it wasn't enough. I told a select few people that I was experiencing kidney failure as a direct result of my diabletes I've had all my life.If I didn't get a kidney transplant, I had only 6 months to live. I figured I'd be over the chatroom and my new friends by then.
In my real life, I was experiencing college and living away from home for the first time. I have a desperate desire to please people and I have the hardest time saying no, so I joined a couple BIble groups that were just a waste of time to me. Ifinally couldn't take it anymore and resign myself to complete and total honesty, except on the intet because it's only the internet. It turned out to be my whole life for way too long.
Concerning my situation with Carrie and her unresolved feelings for me, Ibegan to confide in another Jen whom Icalled Jennifer for clarification. Joe began to confide in me about a girl named Ashley who was playing mind games with him and another guy named Shane. She ultimately chose Shane and Joe was crushed but she didn't stop there. She tried to steal Chris away from Lainey while she was still with Shane. And eventually, stole the first and so far only guy I've ever loved. I've never loved anyone more.
His name is Eric and we did not get along at all at first. We clashed over Ashley from the beginning.Even before he cheated with her on me. Carrie and I said what a horrible, heartless, selfish person she is, but he wouldn't listen. Ashley and my relationship was never officially defined as anything. We were nice to each other most of the time, in passing. But we never talked intimately after she thought I betrayed her by talking smack about her behind her back. Maybe that's why she stole my Eric away. But it wasn't until April 2004, only a few weeks after Eric and I decided to date because Ihad recently come out as being gay. Another twist in my internet fantasy life that would haunt me to this day.
Eric thought I was stupid and hyper and a clown. He didn't respect me because he didn't think I respected Ashley, who was still with Shane while she and Eric were gradually getting closer. But one day I said something intelligent and his whole perception of me changed. Since then we were inseparable. We did everything together in the chatroom. We had the same fonts and said the same things and liked the same music and had the same sense of humor. We even liked to annoy the same people. He defended me countless times to numerous people and lost a lot of friends because of it. But he was a pothead and that really bothered me. I tried to get him to stop by claiming that i would cut myself if he smoked weed. I also said that I had a history of mental illness and hospital stays. Apparently the drama with Carrie and Smithifer wasn't enough. I wanted more, and I got it.
Our relationship suffered the biggest blow yet when Lainey told me that Eric was cheating on me withAshley. I couldn't believe it. I was in total shock. I was sick to my stomach. I couldn't stop crying. I couldn't leave my bed for days. Eric had to have known what he was doing. He had to have known he was hurting me. I knew Ashley was a slut and a whore but I didn't think she'd ever had a reason to hurt me. It turns out, she didn't need one. But why did she hurt Shane? It wasn't the first time she took advantage of his good nature and faith in her. Eric's and my relationship, however, had another challenge: the chat's resident stoner, Ron. He was always trying to expose some scandal or secret but also pretended to be everyone's friend. He was definitely two-faced. I was always cared of him telling Eric how I felt and that I didn't trust Eric. Eric hated when Iconfided inRon because he didn't trust Ron, either. Eric wanted the whole mess he caused to go way and my talking to Ron just perpetuated it all. That's whenI realized that my emotions had overpowered my intelligence and logic.
I made Eric feel as guilty as possible as often as I could but I still wanted the whole mess to go away. I wanted to go back when Eric and I had no history with and no attachment to each other. I stumbled upon Ashley's livejournals and read anything I could find about her and Eric but somehow she knew I was lurking. She would come into chat from time to time and talk to random people there, but not any regs. I would just pretend I wasn't around and just read everything she typed. She made me shake and my blood run cold, even after almost a year since she and Eric were finished for good, when she visited him and was fat and ugly; completely different from the fake pictures she sent to everyone. When she came back into the chat for the final time and I saw her screen name after I woke up from my name, i just fell to my knees and sobbed into my mattress. Michelle was there to try to comfort me, but I had lost my mind by then. A few days later, I decided the torment was too great and decided to OD. My body puked up all the pills I took on an empty stomach but later that morning Iwas shaking and couldn't breathe well so my dad took me to the ER and I had to go to the loony bin for a day. I felt so terribly helpless that I wrote an 8 page letter to my doctor and she let me leave after only 24 hours.
It wasn't the first time that Ashley came back to torment me. She came back in October 2004, the first time I thought it was over. I couldn't stand it anymore; I couldn't see the two of them together so I stayed out of the chat and got into bed for several months until I came back home for Christmas break. One night, Eric IMed me, wanting to reconcile, claiming he was done withAshley for good. I believed him and came back to the chat on January 1, appropriately. But a few months later, as previously stated, she DID come back. He WASN'T done with her. And I broke down. She did get to see him, but he didn't want to be with her. They were finally over, but I was always suspicious and made Eric feel guilty every now and then, up until we stopped talking.
Once Eric finally got over Ashley, order was restored the the chat and she never came back. She ended up getting pregnant by some guy named Carl and her daughter will be 4 years old in September. the good times. The good times didn't last long, however. People started growing up and getting real lives. The music0 crew began to disintegrate. Max and Lainey invited me to the powerpuff girls chat where I met a whole new group of people with no sex bots. It was full of mostly arrogant scene kids under legal driving age but I met a kid named Josh who was really nice and fun and actually talked to me all night. Augie would show up from time to time as well. But once I left music0, I lost contact with Michelle, Shane, Carrie, and a lot of others. some had already left, like Joe, Melissa, Jennifer, Dan, and Nicole. n00bs were taking over and it wasn't the same. But neither was PPG. I still came into music0 for a while, until Eric had enough of the lies and secrets. I couldn't tell him the truth so Imade up another vague lie but it didn't suffice this time. Instead of telling him the truth, I decided to end our friendship. By the end of the summer in 2006, word had gotten around that I was the biggest fake in the history of the internet. But they still don't know who I really am. Cindy and Eric still made the occasional attempt to reconnect. But as the months and years wore on, their attempts came less and less often.
I decided that the best thing for me was to get back to the real world so I contacted several of my old high school friends and got together with them. I went to see Fall Out Boy with one of my friends whom I've known since elementary school. I even made some new friends and got a new boyfriend. One that I could talk to, not just in an IM window. I think of everyone less each day than I did the day before. Sometimes days, even weeks go by when I don't think of them at all, until a thought of them blindsides me on some idle afternoon or in the middle of the night. But lately I've been thinking about them a lot, even Ashley. I don't think I'll ever completely stop thinking about them, and I know I'll never forget them. But it's a lot easier to deal with the loss when I have a real life to fall back on.
With the help of Max, a hacker from Florida, I stole all her internet aliases from every imaginable program/site. I even found more of her online journals and took them over, too. I told Eric and he thought it was so funny and wanted to join in. I was so relieved because I thought he would be upset that I was still obsessing over Ashley. To this day, I still check her myspace to see if it's still private. I still look at Eric's facebook and myspace. I still see if Michelle has updated her livejournal. She's married now. I've saved chats, IMs, pictures, and drawings from everyone and they're on a CDin my room. I save the pictures I find onEric's facebook. I wonder if they still think about me or if I'm the only one who reminisces about music0. We had a lot of fun. A bunch of us would go into other chatrooms and scroll the star of David on multiple screen names for hours at a time. We played scrambler where the only answer I wanted to get right was Good Charlotte. I was so good at the states game and got so mad when I lost because of lag. I'd laugh so much with those people. I wish I still knew them.

Eric We happened to find the music0 chat around the same time. So close together, in fact, that I don't know which one of us was there first. He likes hip hop and smokes a lot of weed so he and Ashley immediately formed a friendship based on common interests. He was my first and only e-boyfriend and he never considered us to be a real couple. I've never gotten over him and I don't ever want to forget about him
Ashley She was the chat's resident slutbag. She played Joe and Shane, tried to cheat on Shane once with Chris (who was dating Lainey at the time) and started dating Eric when she knew that he was with me. She's pretty much a heartless bitch.
Joe He's a little slow, but he has the best of intentions and a good heart. He left the chat not long after it came out that Eric was cheating on me with Ashley, whom Joe was planning to meet in Las Vegas in July 2004.
Shane I didn't know him very well for the first few months, but when we had heartache in common, we really bonded and he's the nicest, smartest guy I've ever met. He didn't deserve to get hurt like he did.He likes metal and hockey.
Chris He acted a lot older than he was. He had a tough guy, punk rock persona but it soon melted away and he showed that he's a sweet guy but doesn't warm up to new people easily. He was tested by Ashley just after he and Lainey started dating, but he resisted her.
Lainey She's the one who told me about Eric and Ashley. She always made sure everyone was alright and did whatever she could to make them feel better.
Jen/Smithifer I met her the very first time I was in music. It was her first time there, too. I don't know what it was that made us instantly click, but she was my first friend from the chat.
Jennifer She was my best friend in the chat, even though I didn't start talking to her until I needed someone to share my dramatic life with. She's a good listener and a genuine person. I could tell her anything and we would talk for hours.
Ron is unpredictable and not to be trusted but I wanted any kind of sympathy I could get from anyone who would listen so I confided in him when I had no one else, despite my better judgment. He was a shape shifter, and I could never tell if he was being serious or not so he made me really nervous.
Carrie she was the first one who showed me her pictures in chat and I was her little brother and she was my big sister. After our friendship changed, I liked to amuse myself by annoying her with Eric.
Michelle We didn't always get along until she told me about how poorly Ashley treated her, too. I felt sorry for her and saw that she really is a good, caring person. She sent me a birthday card she made for me. She was there the night I saw Ashley and Eric talking in the chat for the first time in months before Iwas sent to the loony bin. She was always the voice of reason.
Cindy she was 14 when I first met her. She liked Eric and she told me, so I appreciated her honesty. She said that she wouldn't go after him as long as I was still not over him. After I abandoned my friendships though, I shouldn't mind that they're dating but I do because I still want to be with him and now they're living together. I'm secretly hoping it won't work out, even though she has every right to date him. I don't deserve to get what I want.

Adjacent this scene sits an observer, a perceptual subject, someone that manifests the causations, elusions and illusions that are fertile in such ‘normal’ encounters. Try and imagine being able to see more and deeper than usual, not just what is present to you there and then, but what hides underneath it. Can we be bold enough to say that that is the truth or the essence of the phenomenon; why the phenomenon is? Further, can we be bold enough to say that our perceptive comrade, Mr. Jabin, serves as a medium for the unfolding? Mr. Jabin encounters this truth of the phenomenon and shocks our modest Martin and Elyse. Anyways, the rest of this post will proceed in dialogue format.
Martin: What a lovely night, don’t you think?
Elyse: I agree, it’s beautiful.
Martin: You know, when I asked you out, I was rather worried you would say no. There was something about you that put me in anticipation.
Elyse: What do you mean?
Martin: I don’t know, you appear very together and sure of yourself, so much so that made me question my self-assuredness.
Elyse: Really, I didn’t know I did that to people; you’re the first to make it apparent. I wonder if everyone feels the same.
Martin: I wouldn’t know, but I’m glad I’m of some use.
Elyse: …
Martin: I am sure you’ve experienced this question before, and who hasn’t, but I will try to make it as interesting as I can. What is your great contribution to our humble world?
Elyse: I don’t get it; you mean what do I do?
Martin: (Nods)
Elyse: Oh, I am a beauty consultant for a modeling agency; don’t know if you’ve heard of it – Slim and Slender?
Martin: Right.
Elyse: Yeah, I mostly deal with make-up and skincare.
Martin: How did you get into beauty consultation?
… After an hour and twenty minutes of two cocktails, endless probing questions by Martin and Elyse asking no personal questions in return; Martin will ask the most penetrating question that will pierce right through the date for these two. He gazes at his watch and proceeds…
Martin: How would like to go to a club? I have some friends that are meeting up in central.
Elyse: No thanks, I should really be getting home; I had a nice time though. I will call you sometime.
Martin: Why not?
Elyse: It’s just getting late you know, I have arrangements for tomorrow morning, and I’ve a long day.
Martin: Oh come on, a couple of hours won’t hurt. Plus you’ve got nothing to lose, you’ll meet new people, go to a lively environment, you won’t even feel your fatigue. I promise to get you back home a.s.a.p. to sleep in time for tomorrow.
Elyse: Really, Martin, thank you but I’d rather go home and spend the night in.
Martin: Come on, don’t be boring, and live on the edge a little. Come out and have a great time.
Elyse: You agree that all night I’ve asked you no questions, I’m sure you’ve wondered why; after all you appear to be an astute fellow.
Martin: …
Elyse: So here is my first and only question of the night to you, Martin. From this, I will know all I need to know about you – or maybe I already know who you are and what you are about, and this is just me seeking an affirmation. Tell me Martin, why do you really want me to come clubbing with you?
At this point Martin is flabbergasted, unaware of where that came from and fully aware of the intention. He sweats ever so slightly but inside he is steaming, he knows not what to say.
Martin: … I want you to come out and have some fun with me and a couple of mates; that’s all.
Elyse: Have fun with you and your friends? Or you hoping that they will sell you to me; tell me how great a lover and person you are. Or maybe your friends are just an excuse and you just want to have some fun with me?
Martin: … No.
Elyse: Listen, I am not stupid, I would have thought that my having no alcohol the whole night was obvious enough. I know what you want and I know what I don’t – you are the latter. Nevertheless I want to be sure, so answer my question, why do you want me to come out clubbing with you?
Martin: I…
Mr. Jabin: …Want to sleep with you.
Elyse Martin: …
Mr. Jabin: My apologies, I didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but my dear you changed your tone so much and with such assured aggression that one cannot be blamed for their inappropriate interest. Anyways, I am Mr. Jabin; kids call me Mr. J – makes it easier.
Elyse: Elyse.
Martin: Martin.
Mr. J: Well, Elyse, Martin, I was wondering if I may buy you two another round? You both fascinate me and I wish to talk to you on the duration of the round. Elyse you’re drinking a bloody Mary right? And Martin, you’re enjoying a Mojito?
Elyse: Yes, virgin bloody Mary, thank you but I was about leave.
Martin: Mojito Royal, thank you but I think I should get going, I am meeting my friends in a half hour.
Mr. J: Virgin bloody Mary, now there’s something you don’t hear everyday, and Mojito Royal, I wonder what the difference is. Anyways, I urge you guys to stay just for this drink; you may enjoy what I have to say. The duration is entirely up to you, after all, it’s only one drink, and then you can leave. I even promise to pay for both your cabs.
Elyse: I don’t know…
Martin: You’ve got half an hour from me.
Elyse: Alright, I’ll stay too. What have you got to say old man?
Mr. J: Excellent. I must say, I was inspired by your honesty Elyse, and your forward yet reserved attitude with Martin. Martin, I was fascinated by your guile and subtlety; it was obvious that you cared about Elyse’s feelings. Yet both of you are here, both hoping for something, both carrying something with you and both attempting to get or achieve something. I will talk for a while because you’ve limited my time, so please I urge you to stop me if you feel that you need to say something. Was this supposed to be a date?
Elyse: Yes.
Mr. J: Then it clearly didn’t go very well, or rather as you both have hoped it would go?
Martin: No.
Mr. J: I see, so this is what you hoped for – that the date would go well, yet at the same time it isn’t what you hoped for is it guys? You both had different ideas of what you hoped would happen. Martin had a different picture of you before he came here and as did you Elyse, otherwise you would have not agreed to the date.
Elyse: …
Mr. J: Here’s what I think guys. You’ll both go away and think about this date. This is elementary stuff, you both know this. Both of you are affected by this encounter. Both, I would say, are disappointed by it. Yet, will any of you two ask yourselves why? Perhaps you both will and settle with the answer, “It’s her”, or “It’s him”. Once you’ve made this claim, there are two ways you can go, either, it’s ‘her’ or ‘him’ just the once, or it’s every ‘her’ or every ‘him’. You’ll both, or one of you, eventually come to the conclusion that it is the counterpart’s fault, due to the frequency of the encounters – due to the fact that it happens all the time and with many others.
Elyse Martin: …
Mr. J: There will be one of you, and I am willing to place my money on Elyse at the moment, although this is usually Martin’s question, who will ask eventually “what if it’s me?”, and from that moment a whole new world unfolds. From there, the person that asks, either changes for the good or the worse. We shall not consider that phenomenon as that would take much too long. Yet, I want to bring this back to why this failed. If I ask you why, you would both say that it is because you are incompatible, or that the other is x, y and z negative things. I will boldly say however, that you are both wrong. Incompatibility is an illusion, and, x, y and z are false judgments.
Elyse: What?
Martin: What the hell?
Mr. J: Exactly. I thought the same when I first heard these words; allow me to elaborate. Let’s ask you then, Elyse do you like to be happy, to laugh, to be loved and to feel that you are successful in what you do?
Elyse: Yes, of course.
Mr. J: I see, how about you Martin?
Martin: Yeah, definitely.
Mr. J: So you both want the same things. I ask you then, where is the incompatibility in this picture? If you both want the same things out of life, why would you ever feel that you are incompatible? It is not incompatibility, even if you show me something less universal and more particular about your desires that makes for incompatibility, it is still not the reason why this date failed. Again I will not go down the road of more particular desires and incompatibility, because that is a question regarding relationships, and this is merely a date. It isn’t judgments either; none of you have known the other long enough to make a real and concrete judgment about the other that stands. Even if you did, I would challenge you to think about the notion of change; no judgment about a human beings personality is concrete, because that person can change. If it is none of these obvious and common things, then what is it? Why does most dating go wrong and rarely breed that most desired emotion of ours called love?
Martin: What if we do not care and just wish to move on with our lives without pondering on things so deeply? You know, some of us just don’t have the time to think about these things.
Mr. J: True, very true. You’ve spoken like a modern man; I respect your insufficient time to ponder on these problems. Tell me though Martin, how many hours a day do you spend thinking about these things, thinking about encounters with women; and with your friends, what you do talk to them about. Tell me, how long did you spend thinking about your last failed date, and how much time did you waste on recurring thoughts that did nothing for you but inspire emotions you couldn’t control or you didn’t want? They say 98% of our thinking is useless.
Martin: I never saw it like that.
Mr. J: The same goes to you too Elyse, unfortunately nobody is exempt from this, me included – obviously. We waste time thinking about our opposite sex, yet our thinking is never constructive, all we do is feed the already apparent polemos between the sexes. Polemos means war in Greek; I really like the word, there’s an elegance to it.
Elyse: It’s true; all women converse about is men and they’re always asking each other ‘why did he say this, what did he mean; or why doesn’t he do this or that’?
Mr. J: Exactly.
Martin: Men too, but we don’t really ask that many questions about women; some of us though, just say nothing because we don’t have anything to say, or boast about our encounters. Makes most of us who are not that good with women feel inferior, and so we desire to be like the boasters. The only way we know to do this is through thought, we think situations to the bone, and we bleed them dry with alternate scenarios and fantasies – the ones amongst us who can think anyway, the ones that can’t just settle for calling women sluts or bitches and moving on.
Mr. J: It is curious indeed. The one thing we desire the most and spend most of our time thinking about, we can’t get right. We are truly ignorant. The boasters you mention Martin, or rather and more accurately the ones who are good with women, fall under two categories: the liars, which is self-explanatory, and the lovers - although I would not expect a true lover to boast about his encounters with women. The latter are the more interesting, for they have mastered this realm we call dating with their seductive ways. For true lovers though, theres something sacred between them and the feminine, a bond that they cannot explain and wish to not explain lest they lose it. They are master seducers, geniuses of the art of love – the one first brought forward by an illustrious Roman called Ovid. There is way too much to say about lovers, I wish not to go down that road. Instead I want to tell you guys bluntly, that dating doesn’t work. It is not your fault Elyse that Martin wants to have sex with you, and it is not your fault Martin that Elyse doesn’t want to see you again. Both of these dilemmas stem from a broken arrow, an arrow that is meant to represent the traditional and straight movement that a man should follow when he is to meet a woman – the arrow of courting. This arrow does not serve its purpose anymore, it cannot pierce a heart and cause love, it pierces a heart and causes misery, pain and polemos – after all arrows are meant for war. Unfortunately, courting is broken, it is wrong, and it doesn’t work anymore. You simply cannot court a woman from the off, wooing is reserved for a time where wooing was rare. Wooing a woman from the off will only succeed if she is not really a woman.
Elyse: But I want to be wooed.
Mr. J: Of course you do, only a fool would deny that, it is not what I was implying. Rather, who would you prefer to be wooed by, somebody you know well and you like, or a stranger you just met?
Elyse: Somebody I know well.
Mr. J: Precisely; and Martin is a stranger you just met. Nonetheless, back to courting. Courting has one intention, sex. No courting would happen if sex was possible without it. The meta-reason for courting is sex, regardless of the other reasons that stem or arise from it, such as love, marriage, relationship etc. There is an order of primacy here. The main motive for courting is sex. You both know this, if not consciously then unconsciously, that you’re both here tonight to negotiate sex; as if sex needs negotiation. You both want it and that is true, almost every human being wants sex at some point in their life, because if human beings didn’t want sex and were happy in themselves, then human beings wouldn’t exist. If I could have sex with myself and be satisfied, then there would be no need for you dear Elyse. So courting is about sex, and that means a date is about sex too. You’re both here carrying something, and that thing is this idea that this could lead to sex, and you both want sex otherwise you wouldn’t agree to be here tonight. The reasons why are not for this post.
Elyse: Wow, you think really deeply.
Martin: Yeah, is this healthy?
Mr. J: (Smiles). You’re both here to negotiate sex. Martin is here to get laid and Elyse is here to get laid too, but Elyse has more to guard against (and more options). She has to guard herself against the non-thinkers you mentioned before Martin, the boasters too; not to mention other girls and their words full of . She is afraid of many things, things that you wouldn’t understand, because you’d have to experience them, as her, to be able to unfold them in such a way that you would understand them fully. All you can do is manipulate the situation and work around it (which is what the lovers do), never understanding it in its totality, for that you would need a revelation, an unfolding; and you cannot unfold what it is like to be Elyse without actually being her. Anyways, I digress, back to the point. Elyse has many things to guard herself against, and the situation she finds herself in is not exactly one that she finds easy to do that with. She is aware of what you are expecting Martin, she is aware of your presuppositions, your assumptions, about her coming on a date with you; she is after all, a rational being.
Martin: It is true, I was attracted to Elyse, but I didn’t want to sleep with her… see I can’t even say that because I did want to sleep with her; but not straight away you… I can’t say that either because I do… Damn you old man, I’m digging myself a hole here and you’re not helping.
Mr. J. Elyse: (Laughter)
Elyse: No he’s right, I was fully aware that you wanted to sleep with me, I’m not an idiot, and it’s precisely why I came here tonight and let you court me – I was attracted to you too and I knew exactly how far we could go in my mind, but it didn’t go according to mind or rather it went as I would have expected. I was trying to make it obvious to you that I wasn’t going to be that easy, by acting disinterested and also not drinking alcohol; even the drink I bought was thought out. All was to show that yes I am interested but you have a lot of work to do if you are to get what you want. I did all this however, not realizing that it is what I wanted too, but… I don’t know what to say because anything I say will be an excuse or a masquerade for the fact that I wanted to sleep with you too. Mr. J is right. The thing is, we want sex too, so badly, but we are afraid of all the consequences that come with it, and for us there are many more than there are for you guys. I think that is why I am like this, but I don’t wish to be. I dont sit there and think this through, no, it is a feeling more than anything - so ingrained in me that I dont even notice it; its like second nature to me.
Martin: Wow, I never saw it like that. I am stunned. Here I was thinking all along that women are like this by nature, thinking that they don’t like sex as much as guys; or they are naturally annoying about it, but in reality they’re not. I see now that men brought this to themselves. Why didn’t I see this before…
Mr. J: It is truly remarkable viewing the faces of people who witness for the first time an aspect of themselves they did not know was there. The look on their eyes is at first one of horror, then this moves into despair as they begin to reminisce the countless times they’ve entered experiences without realizing that this aspect was ruling their actions unconsciously. Finally, after this turbulent and albeit painful catharsis, you witness a freedom and wonder in their eyes, as if they have gained their innocence back somehow, or almost as if they’ve winded back a few years right there and then.
Elyse: I don’t know what to say…
Martin: Me neither, I came here tonight to meet a girl; I ended up meeting myself.
Mr. J: There is so much more to say, but I think the rest of it you can both think for yourselves. After all, I cannot give you it all, some revelation is required on your part through your own thoughts and experiences. Time is up, I have done my bit here, and I’m eternally grateful for your time. Now, to your taxis, as I promised.

Lesson: Orgasms induce sleep and falling asleep during a one night stand is probably what made it a one night stand in the first place.
