For our wedding, we kept it to family and close friends only because we did not want a large extravaganza like my sister. The photographer caught every detail that I still have kept away in a scrapbook to this day. The photographers were very simple to work with and so friendly. They made the experience so worthwhile that I had considered using a photography company from now on. Cingular beleive all iTunes or iPod users would jump ship
from their cell providers to run over and buy that phone?
So back to Larry Page and Google Video As I said, I have
an iPod and want to be able to download those Google Videos
to my iTunes (both computer and iPod) and play them there.
While Page suggested that it was possible to do that (on
non-copy protected videos), Ive seen comments suggesting
that the Digital Rights Management (DRM) used in Google Video
is different from that in the iPod / iTunes DRM.
I imagine that Page brought up DRM because they were
compelled to copy protect many of the copyrighted videos they
would sell through the new service and Apple wouldnt make
their iTunes / iPod DRM standard available or interoperable
with Google Video DRM. Sony Play Station Portable (PSP) has
the same issue (love that rootkit Sony) with DRM and Page
mentioned PSP in his speech as well.
So finally, Ill get to my point about freely available
web content. I established the Free-Content list in 1999 to
make articles of writers online available to publishers
online for use in ezines, newsletters and on web sites.
Authors have always only asked for one thing in exchange for
that use - a link back to their web site.
We authors do this to increase our reach, our visibility and
our web site rank. As publishers we do it to increase our
valuable content and offer our readers more than we are able
to produce ourselves - to broaden available viewpoints beyond
our own limited views and to increase search engine rank. How
interesting that FREELY available content does so much for
all three parties - Author, Publisher, Reader can all find
(on the search engines) material we are interested in, view
related advertisements (from Google Adsense) that may very
well be of extreme interest to reader, support the publisher
(and the advertiser, and Google) while that link back to the
authors site increases their visibility in search engines.
What an amazing feedback loop.
So back to Larry Page and his plea for standards and
interoperability He stated plainly that standards would
lead to inventions nobody could foresee or that no one person
could dominate or control. I agree emphatically and believe
that Free web content has the same beneficial effects on the
web due to those things mentioned above. I believe that the
Creative Commons open content licensing agreements benefit
all in the same way open standards of DRM would benefit video
and music content producers if you take the power and control
out of the hands of Sony and Apple and CBS and Cingular and
Motorola and put it in the hands of the content authors.
Why hasnt Creative Commons taken hold as strongly on Video,
Music and the visual arts as it has in writing and textual
content?
Larry page missed an opportunity there. Maybe a conscious
decision NOT to support Creative Commons was made. Maybe it
was too controversial to discuss with CBSs Moonves on stage
beside him and hundreds of consumer electronics executives
and representatives in the Consumer Electronics Show keynote
audience. None of those company execs would support open
standards if it meant they lose control of their content
(profits).
The geeks in attendance (Page, in his comments, included
himself in that group) would all LOVE to be able to swap
Google Videos between their phones (Verizon Vcast - which
wont allow it), iPods, Personal Computers (both Apple and
Windows boxes), Sony PSPs, Microsoft Xboxes and any future
standards-based players. But it is not to be unless and until
those competing companies see a way to share in the profits.
Google is sharing profits from their Adwords advertising with
Adsense for publishers while providing one of possibly the
greatest services (free search to find content). There will
emerge methods and inventions to share profits if
manufacturers and service providers let go of their
proprietary DRM and approve standards of interoperability
among electronic devices.
I might attempt to sell this article to the New York Times who
might pay me for the three hours it took to write - but Id
rather it is seen, used and my voice is heard more widely.
Ive been published paid by the NY Times for photographs
but they are not available anywhere to my knowledge now.
I would love to see them available online instead of the old
delicate, yellowing newsprint tear sheet I have of those photos.

*Not quite half of all born again Christians (47%) strongly reject the notion of earning salvation through their deeds.
[Note: that means that only 53% of born-again Christians beleive that one cannot earn their salvation.]
*Slightly less than two-thirds of the born again segment (62%) strongly believes that Jesus was sinless.
*93% of born again adults believe God is the all-powerful, all-knowing creator of the universe who still rules it today.

Also, centering on the Bible more than the psychobabble and self-esteem teaching we are hearing today, not even to mention occultic experiences (Third Wave Charisamtics), occultic practices (contemplative spirituality and spiritual formation) and emergent postmodern relativism and Hegelian synthesis that are flooding into our churches.

As you may have concluded from the lack of posts last weekend, Megan and I were out of town over Presidents Day. Fully inspired from our Sundance jaunt we decided another vacation was in order, hoping to cure any Valentines Day depression with sunlight and new boys, we hopped on American flight 29 to our old abode, sunny Los Angeles. Unlike our Utah trip, this time we were serious about finding ourselves nice new media boyfriends. But not without some trepidation, we had after all left LA in search of greener, more exciting, banker-filled pastures in NYC just a few years ago.
The first day there we were taken around town by trip MVP Andy B., first stop: lunch at authentic sushi restaurant Sasabune, where along with two of Andys media friends we washed our blue crab rolls down with sake. Sake bombs over a long lunch on a work day without any judgmental stares? (one point LA). Despite Megans black satin Gucci dominetrix pencil skirt and razor sharp bob not quite fitting in, and my Im-so-poor-I-may-be-homeless-soon jokes not garnering the same its-true response as they did at home, we otherwise blended right in. Just as the sake started to kick in, our blackberries started vibrating. Our trusty DABA intern just sent us an urgent email reporting that the markets had closed with the Dow down 100 points and SP down more than 500 points. We looked up, fearful of the doom that was sure to descend on our carefree lunch, but nobody elses blackberries were anywhere to be seen. And could that be laughter we hear? Sure enough, Harvey, Yan, and Andy were totally caught up in a debate over Jessica Simpsons fat jeans. Desperate to be part of this happy-go-lucky world we decided to blame our inability to smoothly re-enter into west coast society on our jet-leg and embrace the ignorance. Three more sake shots and we had all but forgotten the markets mood swing.
En route back to the BH (short term for Beverly Hills used by those in the know) one of our lunch dates started shreking with delight. Used to only hearing these noises coming from a man on 8th Ave in Chelsea, we turned around to see half of Harveys body hanging out of his window.
Harvey: OMG, OMG the dog in the car next to us looks exactly like my dog! motioning to the car next to us Pull up, pull up!
The lady in the car pulls up and rolls down her window, her French bulldog sticks his nose out.
Harvey: Frenchie, frenchie, oooohhhh youre sooo cute, how did you get soooo cute?? To the lady, How old is she?
Lady: Two going on three.
Harvey: s almost 4 now, ohhhh your dog is sooooo cute!
The light turns green and we speed off.
Harvey: That dog isnt nearly as cute as my dog.
Me: Yeah I could tell.

I look over to Megan whose head is cocked to one side, with a bewildered look on her face. Apparently our sarcastic, in this case hippy-dippy, humor didnt translate either. Ok, cross off sarcastic, dark, and Self-deprecating jokes. Was this why we left LA. in the first place? (Two points New York.)
Its 4 pm and its off to the Havana Room we go. Megs and I are ushered into a smoke filled room to meet more of Andys talent agent friends. Sitting at a round table in the middle of the room are three late twenty something guys, each dressed to the nines a la American Psycho. Side Note: We have no future as professional age guessers in LA. They were all in their mid-thirties but hadnt aged exponentially from the work hard, play hard mentality that weve come to know and love in New York. On the other hand, who cares if we misjudged their age? Dating guys twenty years your senior is A-Ok in LA. (One point LA)
Sitting down at the table Megan and I are facing a ratio of 2:1, guys to girls, but were not bothered in the least. Despite most of our jokes having fallen flat on this trip, we perform best under pressure. As the saying goes, If you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere. Besides, were not just anyone, were the DABA Girls! We can out flirt anyone, no matter the coast. Determined to impress our new found media men, we tossle our hair, press together our spray tanned cleavage (hey, sometimes Paris Hilton gets it right), and break out our most charming smiles (more of a smirk in Megans case, shes adopted Posh Spices no teeth policy) and wittiest stories.
Megan doesnt waste anytime launching into one of her favorite schtiks, It must be nice in L.A. not having to worry about acquiring a winter girlfriend.
Jim leans in closer, one eyebrow raised: s a winter girlfriend?
Me: You know, someone to keep you warm during the cold winter months, when its too miserable to go outside.
Megan: But you have to get one by Thanksgiving, all the good ones are gone after that.
Laughs all around.
Me: Seriously though, its rough. I didnt even find a winter boyfriend this season. I swear, no one in New York is dating right now.
The men confidently lean back in their chairs, puff on their cigars, and smile at each other knowingly. Their eyes are saying, New York is so over. But, their demeanor is so confident we realize that maybe theyre not comparing themselves to our revered bankers. Maybe, just maybe, they dont even care about their NYC counterparts. Looking around the table we realize that these guys arent just media men, theyre the banking guys from the 80s. The mythical men that we moved to New York in search of. Rock solid in their decisions, overly confident in their abilities (I mean, what do agents actually do?), and totally handsome. Were sold. (Five points LA.)
